If you are planning your first trip to Costa Rica and trying to figure out which places to visit in the limited time you have then you have most certainly got your work cut out for you. Costa Rica, though small in size, is absolutely packed with beautiful beaches, rain forests, wildlife, and natural wonders. Trying to narrow down the choices to 3 or 4 can be a daunting challenge.

If you've been doing your research on Costa Rica then you've no doubt heard of Tamarindo by now. On the Pacific Coast, in the northern province of Guanacaste, Tamarindo is a nice compromise for first time travelers to the country, and a Tamarindo vacation can be enjoyed by backpackers to luxury travelers.

Why do I call Tamarindo a compromise? Well, many veteran Costa Rica travelers will tell you that Tamarindo is too touristy, overdeveloped, and is not indicative of the true flavor of Costa Rica. They are right, to a certain extent. However, most of them have been traveling long enough to remember a time when the country really was an undiscovered gem, and many of them are bitter that their exclusive hideaway has been discovered by the world. Yes, Tamarindo is more touristy than many other towns in Costa Rica, but for those used to vacationing in Mexico, Jamaica or Hawaii this relatively tiny beach community will still seem rustic and charming. There are no skyscrapers in Tamarindo, no sprawling luxury resorts. Sure, there are some beautiful, upscale hotels, but they are modest in size, and they blend in nicely with the local surroundings.

So, don't let the opinions of others dissuade you from planning a Tamarindo vacation. There is still plenty of beauty and fun to be enjoyed in Tamarindo including fabulous beaches, rain forest teeming with wildlife, fantastic surfing and much more. Yes, as you travel Costa Rica you may find places you enjoy more, but for the first time traveler Tamarindo is the perfect introduction to Costa Rica and a visit here will really help you get a good feel for the culture of the country.
